New Zealand's Original On-line Kayak & Fishing Store

The event started on Friday night with registration and briefing where everyone was provided with a run down on the fishing and other information including the weather forecast. It was great to see some old familiar faces as well as a large number of new comers to the sport of kayak fishing. At briefing attendees who were on their own soon had a buddy to fish with on the water the next day. Some also indicated they wanted to learn softbait fishing with Dave Burrett and would need to meet him out the front of Papa Aroha Holiday Park between 5.30-5.45am. The next day of the competition had all fishing in ideal conditions and the reports that came in showed various results with some finding things slow while others getting among plenty of fish.

The snapper section proved to be a challenge also with the size limited to fish from 35 to 60cm. It certainly kept the category open for anyone to win and some were unlucky with fish only half a centimetre too big. Weigh in from 3 to 5pm saw plenty of snapper coming in at a range of sizes plus some very nice john dory with most caught on softbaits. A number of photos were also presented of snapper that came into the over 60cm category with some of them up to 20lbs. Not many kahawai came in and these proved to be elusive on the day as did trevally and kingfish. We also had some blue cod, gurnard and squid come in for the mystery species. The best part was seeing some of the younger competitors bringing in their catch and always great to get kids into the outdoors.

The day was quite hot with full sunshine making the evening social pleasant and the dinner at 6.30pm went down well. One of  the highlights was Mike and Pete Bell doing smoked pork and chicken in the spit roast they brought along. It certainly was a splendid feast with most making a big effort with food they had prepared and Janet was the main driving force behind this.

Prize giving followed the meal and the amount of prizes given out was amazing with the majority of club members taking away plenty of goodies.

After the competition prize giving we took a short break to enjoy some dessert and it was yet another amazing array of sweet things that included fruit salad, cakes, cheese cake, strawberries, apple pie and much more. Then it was time to draw the spot prizes and with over 35 prize packs to give away most got to take something away with them.

This event would not be possible without the generosity of our sponsors. This year we had a massive amount of prizes turn up from our suppliers and Rob Fort's personal sponsors.
