MASK AND SNORKELS
The face mask is one of the most important pieces of equipment as it allows a free diver to see underwater. The most suitable type has shatter proof glass for lenses set into a soft flexible silicon rubber skirt which forms an air tight seal around your face. The silicon rubber should be black to stop any light coming in from the sides. Clear silicon can distract a spear fisherman taking his/her attention away from what you might be trying to focus on and when on the surface light also comes in the sides and reflects on the lenses making it difficult to see what is below. The mask should be low internal volume and have a good field of vision. Finding the right mask to fit your face differs between each individual person. The best way to check if a mask fits you in is to place the head strap over the front of the mask and then place it on your face. Then sniff a little air out of the mask to create a vacuum effect and tilt your head forward so you are looking down at the ground. If the mask doesn’t fall off then it seals properly on your face, again you will know when you have the right one for you as it will feel very comfortable. If you purchase a mask through the website then we will replace with another if it doesn’t fit your face.
Your snorkel needs to be as basic as possible and should not have any purge valves. Some specialized snorkels designed for the free diver are made of a soft and flexible material and will bend when moving through tight spaces. Your snorkel must have enough internal diameter size to allow proper air flow while breathing. A comfortable silicon mouth piece will also be an advantage. One other thing to watch out for is the clip that comes with your snorkel for attachment to your mask.
